The Issue

Australia is vying to co-host the UNFCCC’s COP31 Summit with Pacific island nations in 2026. Concurrently the debate around climate change has reached new heights in the country since the Albanese government gave the ‘go ahead’ for Woodside Energy to expand its gas extraction facility at Burrup Peninsula in Western Australia.

In addition to the immeasurable and inarguable climate change impacts of the extension of the gas extraction license, the construction of the $6.4 billion Perdaman urea chemical fertiliser plant adds considerable and additional environmental impact potential to the overall outputs of the site.

Arguments as to the necessity of one or both facilities will no doubt go on for a long time, and the arguments in favour run from the simplistic blue collar, employment creation proposition to the energy arguments about keeping the lights on and providing an energy base for business to continue to function around the world.
