Working With Nature's Intelligence
From Erosion Gully to Chain of Ponds
Regenerative farming is about working with nature to repair and rebuild the landscape — understanding how nutrients cycle, soils heal, and life regenerates.
By understanding how nutrients are recycled we can speed up the repair process. Jillamatong used to have a large erosion gully which has been returned to a chain of ponds that flow through the driest seasons and rehydrate the flood plain.
When we truly understand how nutrients cycle through living systems, we stop fighting the land and start partnering with it. Healing accelerates when we align with these ancient rhythms rather than impose our own.
At Jillamatong, this understanding transformed a wounded landscape. Where a deep erosion gully once bled the land dry, a chain of ponds now flows through even the driest seasons, breathing life back into the floodplain. See our gully regeneration story →
Diversity, Ground Cover & Biological Balance
Keeping 100% ground cover is paramount. Our pastures are a diverse mix of native perennials, introduced grasses and herbs of over sixty species, while weeds are viewed as repair plants.
This diversity allows sheep and cattle to self-medicate, balancing their gut flora and reducing worm burdens. Livestock are moved every few days to fresh pasture, with trace minerals or other nutrients available on a free choice basis.

Grazing management feeds the soil with valuable nutrients, building soil carbon and moving fertility up the slopes. We are passionate about planting trees and shrubs for the benefit of birds, insects and animals, leading to a broad range of nuts, fruit and fungi.
What Jillamatong Is Working Towards
Every decision at Jillamatong is guided by a set of clear, interconnected aims — ecological, nutritional, and community-focused.
- Share knowledge and continue learning with the whole community
- Adaptively manage climate variability, reduce costs and increase production
- Sequester carbon and produce nutrient-dense food and clean fibre
- Increase biodiversity in soil, plants and products, with 100% ground cover
- Produce fully pasture-fed meat with balanced Omega 3 and 6 and micro-nutrients
- Increase health and diversity of microbiome to reduce weeds, pests and disease
- Be carbon-positive in operation and reduce reliance on non-renewable energy
"Acknowledging past practices and using a framework to work with nature is the first step in regenerative agriculture."— Martin Royds, Jillamatong
Four Pillars of Regenerative Practice
At Jillamatong, we focus on educating farmers about sustainable practices that promote ecological balance and enhance productivity. Our mission is to empower you with the tools and knowledge to make informed decisions for healthier farming.
Soil as Foundation
Healthy soils are the bedrock of everything. Biological activity, fungal networks and mineral balance drive long-term farm productivity without artificial inputs.
Holistic Grazing
Planned grazing mimics nature's herding patterns — building soil carbon, feeding biology, and distributing fertility evenly across the landscape.
Water Rehydration
Slowing water movement through landscape design — swales, ponds and ground cover — rehydrates farmland and extends productive seasons.
Plant Biodiversity
A diverse sward of over sixty species supports livestock health, pest resistance and soil life — eliminating the need for chemical interventions.
Trees & Shrubs
Strategic plantings create habitat for birds, insects and animals, increasing biodiversity and contributing to a broad range of nuts, fruit and fungi.
Community & Education
Knowledge shared multiplies. Jillamatong opens its gates to farmers, researchers and communities to demonstrate what regenerative practice looks like in action.
